Propane Safety
The safety of you and your family is important to New Horizons Supply Cooperative. Safety must be the priority when handling and using propane. Propane is a safe and reliable fuel when handled and used safely. However, when misused it can be dangerous.
All of New Horizons drivers are CETP certified, which is a nationally recognized training program for propane drivers. As part of New Horizons safety program, our drivers receive ongoing training.
Another part of our safety program is performing a free “Safety Check” of your system when we set a tank. A Safety Check consists of pressure testing the lines to make sure there are no leaks, inspecting your gas system to see if it meets state and federal codes, and checking the date of your regulator. Regulators must be changed every 25 years. During the months of June, July, and August we will perform the Safety Check FREE for those customers that have not had Safety Check within the last five years.
Propane Safety Tips for Your Home
General Tips
- If you smell a leak, immediately evacuate everyone from the building, turn off the propane tank, and call New Horizons or the fire department from your neighbor’s phone. DO NOT remain in the building, use the telephone or light switches, or try to determine the source of the leak by yourself.
- Be aware of where gas service lines are located, especially when working in your yard. Please contact our Service Department should you need help identifying where the lines are positioned.
- Water can damage the internal safety mechanism in the gas controls of an appliance. If you suspect that your appliance gas controls may be wet (because of flooding, for example), have a trained technician replace them immediately.
Out of Gas Policy
There may be times when you unexpectedly run out of propane. This could create an unsafe environment for both you and our delivery drivers, especially if these emergency deliveries occur late at night. Our drivers keep regular routes to maximize their efficiency and minimize operating costs, which keeps LP Gas reasonably priced for our customers.
If you run out of propane, you should:
- Close the service valve on the LP Gas storage tank
- Shut off all furnace and appliance valves
- Call New Horizons Supply Cooperative at 1-800-321-2128
It is imperative that you are home when we can check the gas system for leaks. If leaks are found in the system between the LP Gas storage tank and second stage regulator, our driver or service team will repair the leak. If a leak is found at the second stage regulator, piping in the house, or at the appliances, a qualified technician must repair these leaks before the system can be restarted. If no one is home when we arrive, we will not fill your tank. Our delivery driver will leave an Out-Of-Gas tag instructing you to call us and the return trip will result in additional charges.
The following are charges for Out-Of-Gas situations:
- SCHEDULED DELIVERY CUSTOMERS – No charge
- WILL CALL or COD CUSTOMERS*
- $95.00 Leak Check Fee
- Up to $195.00 Delivery Fee
Will Call or COD customer fees for all services and products are due and must be paid at time of delivery. Charges and receipt of payment will be handled by the delivery driver.
We require two business days for all propane home heat deliveries. If you are not a Scheduled Delivery customer, we suggest requesting an LP Gas refill when your tank reaches no lower than 20%.
We fill tanks to 80% for safety to allow for the propane to expand inside the tank during the hot months. Please see below to see how to read your propane tank and to know how many gallons are in your tank.
